Niraj Warikoo writes about former Dearborn Mayor, John B. O’Reilly Sr., who died this week. As mayor of Dearborn from 1978 to 1985, O’Reilly Sr. was known for guiding the city after the 36-year reign of former Dearborn Mayor Orville Hubbard. O’Reilly Sr. was the first Dearborn mayor to reach out to the city’s emerging Arab-American population. He helped develop business in the South End of Dearborn, a region that today is more than 90 percent Arab-American. His son, John (Jack) O’Reilly Jr., is today Dearborn’s Mayor.
